Saturday 24th January 2015 - MBO Open Day and Third Birthday Party!

Mount Burnett Observatory Inc will be 3 years old on Wednesday 21st January, so we will be celebrating on Saturday 24th with an open day and an evening BBQ, talk and celebration!

  • 1pm until 6pm will be the MBO annual open day - everyone is welcome to come and visit to see what we do and our facilities.
  • 6pm onwards will be our third birthday party, including...
  • 7pm a talk by Perry Vlahos about what there is to see in the coming months sky, and..
  • 8:30pm observing through the observatories telescopes (weather permitting)

During the day time we will have:

  • Tours of the observatory
  • A solar telescope for safe viewing of the sun (never look at the sun without proper protection, you will damage your eyes!)
  • Interactive activities
  • Astronomical videos and images
  • Historical photo displays about the observatory
  • ...and possibly a piece of the Murchison Widefield Array radio telescope!

Everyone is welcome and as an enticement anyone who has joined or rejoined by Saturday will be in the running for a great pair of Saxon 10x50 binoculars! :-)

Please note: MBO will always be closed on days of Severe, Extreme and Code Red fire ratings, please see the CFA website for that information.

As part of the event the MBO's own Perry Vlahos will be running through what there will be to see in the December sky.

Imagine watching films in trees, descending a stairwell into an intimate theatrical encounter, immersing yourself in performance installations, hearing poetry in an observatory dome, or even listening as local astronomy buffs guide you through the solar system.

hillsceneLIVE 3 extends our passion for unusual spaces. This event will be held at the Mt Burnett Observatory, a unique venue comprising small theatrette, outdoor spaces, a giant telescope, hidden nooks, and more! Mt Burnett have generously offered the use of their telescopes for this event: a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with 100 billion stars.

hillsceneLIVE supports the ambitious, the bold, the risky and the brave. Come along on a fanciful journey of live art and performance: be bewildered, inspired and rejuvenated by some of the Dandenong Ranges’ most talented artists.

To keep this event as green as possible, please register for our FREE return shuttle bus service from Belgrave Train Station - Departing 5:30pm.

Dinner by AfroFeast: Australia’s only African mobile food truck. Serving delicious pan-African street foods, using organic and ethically-sourced products wherever possible.
You may pre-order and pay for a 'meal and show' package at the time of ticket booking. Food will still be available for purchase on the night at truck prices; pre-ordering just makes it easier for everyone!

Please note: We have introduced a nominal ticket fee for this event. Your purchased ticket will allow us to provide a fee to artists. By purchasing a ticket for this event, you are supporting the development of artists and their creative endeavours in this wonderful hills region.

Wednesday 8th October - Lunar eclipse public viewing night

Mount Burnett Observatory will be open on the evening of Wednesday the 8th of October for the lunar eclipse from 8:00pm onwards. Partial eclipse begins at 8:20pm with maximum eclipse at 9:55pm.

National Science Week 2014 - "Stars in the Yarra Ranges"

This August the Mount Burnett Observatory will again be involved in National Science Week, this time putting on four events around the Yarra Ranges in conjunction with the ARC Centre of Excellence for All-Sky Astrophysics (CAASTRO) called "Stars in the Yarra Ranges". A feast of astronomy for the whole family is coming to your town!

  • Look through a telescope!
  • Visit our wonder tent of experimentation!
  • Talk to leading  astrophysicists about their research!
  • See the latest raw images from current  space missions!
  • Join in the competition to name an exoplanet!

These are free events with no booking required.
