Friday 10th January 2014 - Alex Filipenko video

This week we will be having our regular monthly Alex Filipenko lecture entitled "The Eath, Third Rock from the Sun", followed by supper and viewing through the MBO telescopes.  This lecture should be very interesting as we often forget about the Earth when we are considering astronomy - too close to home I guess!

Members' Night is on every Friday night commencing at 8PM.  Guests are always welcome.

Please consider the neighbours and drive in quietly using low beam only, or better still, parking lights.

Friday 3rd January 2014 - Sky For The Month

This week at 8pm will be Perrys' regular Sky For The Month presentation, followed by supper and viewing through the MBO telescopes, weather permitting.  Come join us for the talk and for supper!

Xmas Party - Friday 20th December!

For this week’s Members’ Night we have a jam-packed program for you, and get there early so that you don’t miss anything. Firstly, it’s our end of year Xmas party night, so please bring along some goodies to share with the rest of the membership, after our main talk.

For this week’s presentation, our President, Perry Vlahos, will be showing clips from some of your favourite science-fiction movies and TV shows, and dissecting them to show how they got the space and astronomy content wrong – starting from the opening scene of Star Wars and ending with Gravity. And making a detour to some all-time classics prior to this, too. Which ones got it right, and which ones were so bad that even The Simpsons did it better? As they say, all will be the final episode!

This will also be one of the last opportunities to see the naked eye Nova Centauri 2013, before it fades from view. We’ve not had one as bright as this since 1989. If you’ve not seen a naked eye nova before, or any for that matter, don’t miss this chance to have somebody point it out for you.

Furthermore, our pre X-mas Members’ Night is traditionally on the Summer Solstice weekend, which marks the most southerly setting of the sun for 2013 (shortest nights and longest days), and we’ll do as we’ve done over the last couple of years when we’ve watched our local star set from the dam wall. However, there’ll be no sacrifices, unless it’s cloudy. In which case we can take a vote on what to sacrifice to appease the cloud gods!

As always, there will be observing through the MBO telescopes when it gets dark enough.

The celebrations begin at 8pm (woo-hoo!) and guests are welcome.

The MBO would also like to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our members, their families and friends.

Members' Night is on every Friday night commencing at 8PM.  Guests are always welcome.
