Friday 21st April 2017 - Beginner’s Night: Focal Lengths, Focal Ratios and Fields of View

8pm Friday 21st April we have our first "Beginner’s Nights", aiming to help those who are new to astronomy and would like to learn more!

Welcome to the first of our Beginner’s Nights, where we will begin to explore some of the basics of the practical side of amateur astronomy. When we describe telescopes, the first feature we usually state is its aperture, and the second is either its focal length or its focal ratio. These two figures will give us a good picture of how the telescope is likely to perform and what problems it might present. If it’s all gobbledygook to you, then you need to come along and find out what it all means as we explore the importance of focal lengths in both visual and mathematical terms, and present some “rules of thumb” that might help you decide which telescope you buy next.
